Helpful Tips for Protecting Your Outdoor Furniture This Winter

Published Thursday, November 29, 2012

It is that time again; the snow is starting to fall and the air is brisk. Without the proper care and protection, your wood furniture will start to show signs of weathering. Of course, some of us like the weathered look of our furniture, but it’s still best to protect it from the extreme winter weather.

One option to protect your furniture from the elements is to use protective covers. We have swing and table covers available for purchase on our website. Each cover is breathable, UV protective, and will keep your furniture looking new season after season.

Another way to care for your furniture during the winter months is to apply a protective sealant. A sealant protects the wood from moisture damage. Without a sealant, moisture from snow and freezing rain can seep into the wood, causing it to crack and wear.

We also recommend that all of our varnished outdoor Moon Valley products to be lightly sanded and re-finished after the first season. Following the first season, a treatment once a year will suffice.

Finally, if you do not want to leave your furniture outside during the winter, storing the pieces indoors is a great idea. It is important to store in a place, like a garage or shed, that will be protected from the elements and extreme temperatures.

Regardless of which option you choose, with the proper care and attention, your Moon Valley outdoor furniture can stay in great shape and adorn your home for years to come!

Protect and Beautify Your Unfinished Furniture

Published Tuesday, September 04, 2012

Moon Valley product kits are available either finished or unfinished. You may want to choose the unfinished option if you have a certain paint or stain color in mind to match the rest of your living space.

We want to make sure that you get the most from your purchase, so we’d love to share some ideas and tips for finishing your furniture. Upon assembling your product kit, keep these things in mind.

Sanding Your Product

All Moon Valley kit products are pre-sanded before shipping. However, each customer has a different preference as to the level of smoothness for their product. If you want to do a quick touch-up on any part of your product, use a fine grit sandpaper (120-grit or 180-grit) to reach your desired level of smoothness.

Leaving it Unfinished

You're in luck, because Moon Valley products are made from white cedar. Cedar is naturally more resistant to weather decay and insect damage than other types of wood, so you can simply leave it as is. Over time, it will turn a silvery-gray color which gives it a rustic, aged look.

Finishing Your Product

There are a few options for finishing your product. Some suggestions are staining, painting, or applying a varnish. But before you undertake any of these options, please reference the following guidelines for applying exterior clear sealers and finish coats:

  1. Sand all parts to open grain.
  2. Wipe or blow off all contaminates from the surface.
  3. Apply one coat of product (brush, roll, or spray).
  4. Let dry according to directions on container (drying and re-coat times vary with product used).
  5. Sand again, before second coat is applied.
  6. Wipe or blow off all contaminates from the surface.
  7. Apply second coat of product.
  8. Let dry according to directions on container.

If its not branded, then its not Moon Valley

Published Sunday, July 29, 2012

Did you know that we brand every piece of authentic Moon Valley furniture? Before you purchase your indoor or outdoor furniture, make sure that you check for the brand.

Other manufacturers and dealers may claim that their furniture is Moon Valley, but if it isn't branded with our Moon Valley logo, then it is a fake. Our furniture is designed to remain beautiful and strong for many years, our exclusive designs only use the highest quality lumber and are manufactured by the most highly skilled workers.

Unfortunately, we do receive calls about faulty furniture that is not Moon Valley, and we regret that there is nothing that we can do if you purchase an imitation. So check for the brand before you buy! Click here to see how you can tell if it is authentic!
